The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is the premier law enforcement agency of Nebraska with statewide jurisdiction. It is responsible for protecting the lives of the people and maintaining law and order in the Cornhusker State. Four divisions make up the NSP. These include Office of the Superintendent, Field Services Division, Investigative Services Division and the Administrative Services Division.

Requirements for Joining the Nebraska State Patrol
- Must be at least 21 by the time police training concludes
- Must be a legal US national. This includes both naturalized American applicants and those born in this country
- Must have a Nebraska High School Diploma at least. You can also apply with the equivalent GED certificate
- Must possess a Nebraska driver’s license
- Must not have a history of drug/substance abuse.
- Should not have a criminal record against their name in any state
- Should have the ability to understand, read and write in English according to the level exhibited by an 11th grader. This will be evaluated through TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
Steps to Become a Police Officer in Nebraska
After the requirements mentioned above have been met, you must follow the steps outlined below to become a part of the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP).
- Step 1
Fill up the application as well as supplemental questionnaire online. If you fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria outlined in the previous section, your employment application will be processed further.
- Step 2
Clear the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). This evaluation has been designed to assess candidates’ proficiency in Language, Applied Mathematics, Reading, Vocabulary, Mathematical Computation, Language Mechanics and Spellings. You will need a composite score of 11.0 or higher to qualify

- Step 3
Undergo and pass the PAT (Physical Abilities Testing)
- Step 4
Complete and submit the Personal History Questionnaire
- Step 5
Clear all background checks to be carried out by the NSP
- Step 6
Qualify the evaluation of the Employment Review Board (ERB)
- Step 7
Pass the psychological test, medical checkup and polygraph exam.
- Step 8
Clear the final interview to be conducted by the Interview Board. This evaluation team is made up of personnel from the NSP Command
